Introduction:
I'm really far from being the best 3D designer in the world, so if you
have advice or if you know a better way to do something, just
email me, I have still much to learn. If you find my english lacks,
you can send me back a fixed html page.
Phase 1 :
Let's start with creating a 3D sphere element. Now press F3 to have the
X view and draw a primitive linear spline, this will represent the breaking
shape.
Phase 2 :
Now come back in the Perspective View(F1) and add an extrusion to the
spline, we must extrude the element along the X axis(object>nurbs>extrude
nurbs 40 meters extrusion). Move the Extrude element along the X until
we have the complete intersection between the Sphere and the Extruded
Element.
Phase 3 :
Ok, we're ready to create the broken sphere. To do so, sort out a Boole
Function(Objects>Modelling>Boolean). Drop the Extruded Element and
the Sphere inside the Boole, then change the boole function to "A
without B"(it's quite easy to understand the boole function). Double
click on the Sphere Object icon to increase the number of the Segments
to create a smooth object(48 elements instead of 24 it's a reasonable
value).
Phase 4 :
I call the boole object, "Broken Sphere" to have a better feeling
with the project. Duplify the "Broken Sphere" Element, and call
this new one "Broken Shape". In this new Object change the properties
of the Loft Nurbs to "A intersect B". We have created the remaining
part of the sphere, the Shape that we're going to break. In the figure
I've only have this new element. You also have to do the same thing because
we have to do something with it, as you can see the element it's an extruded
element, we want also the external side of this element, let's go ahead,
you will understand better what I mean.
Phase 5: Select the Broken Shape icon and go under Function>Current
state of object(a new obj is created). Inside the new object there is
an Extrude Nurbs part, delete it and also delete the primary Broken Shape,
as you can see we now have what we need. You can now enable the Broken
Shape object again to see the entire sphere.
Phase 6:
(Rename the Sphere inside the Broken Shape to Broken Shape and keep only
this element if you want). Go under Objects> Deformation> Explosion
FX. Drop the Explosion Fx icon under the "Broken Shape". Double
click the FX icon and start looking what happens. Check the "Preview"
Box and play with the timeline. As you can see it's not a real cristal
ball explosion yet.
Phase 7 :
We must now change the Explosion properties to have a better explosion
look. Check the figure for my paramenters. To have clusters more thin
you can increase the Density or just Separate the Broken Shape Element(structure>subdivide)
Phase 8 :
To have something suggestive you can now add a volumetric light inside
the sphere.
Conclusion : Choose a material, add light, do what you want and
render the perspective view. In my example I've used some body Nhut materials.
I've also added a distant light to let the sphere reflect the light somewhat.
